Checking them is a bit of a mission really
It can be very stressful for your Crestie and shouldn't be done very often. I would suggest annually. Or if you suspect a calcium deficiency then just check them.
If you are able to hold your Crestie and tease him into opening him mouth with some live food then thats great if not then it's the hard way......
You have to be confident when handling your Crestie. You need to find a way to hold him so that you are not hurting him but at the same time he can't escape your grip. With your other hand you need to try and get your Crestie to open its mouth nice and wide, then have a look. Healthy calcium sacs should be a white/cream colour and be nice and plump. There is two on the roof of the mouth. I will post a pic in a minute.
It's not that easy to do but once you have done it a few times you will have worked out a way which works.
If you have a female who is laying eggs then really you need to check at the at some point during the breeding season as laying eggs uses a lot of calcium and this is when a deficiency is most likely to occur.
